To much delight of the tracking community, Aceman of modules.pl took upon himself again the task of organizing an unofficial tracked music compo for this year's Breakpoint. As an enthusiastic tracker musician and visitor of Breakpoint I was eager to enter something into this competition; alas, that damn thing called 'inspiration' decided to desert me once again, so this'll have to be the next best thing: reviewing the works of those that did manage to compete!

1. Fegolhuzz - Pimp my Wheelchair (XM)
The winner of this year's compo is an energetic piece of multichannel chippage. Abuse of cliches are arguably part of the genre - no complaints here as it remains catchy, technically correct, and not *too* blatant in its cheesyness. Minor point is the bridge part, which is a was a bit
simplistic melodically.

2. Saga Musix - Infinite Tunnel (IT)
A progressive piece of dream trance might not be the obvious choice to make an impression in a compo. One thing that particularly is the mixing - the track maintains an excellent stereo panorama throughout. The drums sound rather soft, even though that's not a minus really - it allows the listener to focus on the chords and melodies (which are admittedly a tad simple and random in places).

3. Psyria - Dancing Mellow (XM)
Personally I was surprised to see this tune ending up third. It is well-tracked, definitely, but the dealbreaker for me is the dated style (late 1990s German trance comes to mind). This need not be a bad thing if it manages to innovate a little. However all the instruments are familiar, the drum section is predictable, and the melodies are quite bland. Summarizing, far from a bad module, but it has nothing that will make me remember it.
4. Skyrunner - Cerebral Malfunction (XM)
Rather standard fare as far as electro-house goes, but the resonant bass is extremely tasty. Around the three minute mark the tune started to bore me, but it was saved just in time with some nice drum variations. The fact that the song also ends here leaves a slightly unpleasant aftertaste. Overall, do get this tune if you're into this genre.

5. Eha - Absolute Relativity (XM)
The song introduces itself with simple piano doodling, which felt like a weak way to open the song. This is forgiven as soon as tasty drums and chippy basses take over. Melodies remain simple throughout however. Listen once and enjoy the drums - then forget fast.

6. Curt Cool - Blast It All (XM)
A struggle to listen to. Could've been a really decent song if it weren't for half the instruments sounding out of tune to each other.

7. Keith303 - Szenenwechsel (XM)
Keith303 taking up .XM again? Well no, according to the song comments the song was originally made from December '98 to August '99. A sophisticated piece of jazzy drum 'n' bass that deserved much better than 7th place. Maybe it's a style thing.

8. Retrobot0r - Yourney of a Mouse (XM)
4-channel chippage here. The overall sound is harsh and the composition isn't exactly stellar.

9. Ford Prefect - Greeks Fair Let's Song (XM)
If I'd had to label it I would call it 'gamestyle'. Dominated by brass and low piano notes, the composition is quite simple, and further spoiled by some questionable notes. Some interesting/bizarre bits towards the end. On the plus side, it is not lacking in drive.

10. Gouafhg - Granny Dinner (MOD)
I really liked the drums here. It sets up a nice techno-ish vibe, however the tune takes a more melodic twist after about 1:30. There definitely are efforts to keep the song varied, but I lost interest rather quickly.

11. Bacter - Any Questions? (IT)
Clocking in at 1:44 this is the shortest song of the bunch. It starts off really nice with agressive guitars and ditto drumming. Then it takes a turn for the worse at around 0:54, with low chords that are that pretty much destroy the mix. Some additional spice in the drum section would've been welcome too.
Still not a bad song, and as such it could've ended up a bit higher.

12. Xenon - Der Traum (MOD)
Pretty much every aspect of the song is blatantly simple. On top of that, the song is quite boring. The overall impression is that of lack of experience.
